Project 1 - The Heart Shop

Introduction

Traveling as a backpacker is something I am addicted to. It helps widen my eyes and my heart in front of a world with many inequalities. The distance between the the rich and the poor, between the developed and under-developed or developing countries is something haunting to me. I could not have had a different point of view about the world if I hadn't traveled. In my perspective, young people need to be encouraged to go; so the birth of this blog is the result.

Besides, traveling also reveals to me the sufferings of under-privileged people in any society. Bhikkhu Visuddhacara used to say: "The world is made up of people; people make up the world. If you change the people, you are changing the world. And you start with yourself. After all, are you also not one of the people in the world?" Isn't it logical that each of us needs to change our self before thinking of changing the world?

Therefore, the establishment of "The Heart Shop" is to prove that I am starting to change myself and to help people start the changing process of themselves. Everybody in this world needs help but the under-privileged, especially the disabled are those who need help the most.

Talking with the disabled gave me the idea that even though they are disabled, they don't want to be considered as invalid. They can work to support their own families and the most help they need is a market for their products in fact, not the money given as charity. Buying and using their products is helping them stand on their feet proudly. Therefore, changing ourselves should be started with changing our shopping habit - Buy and use more products made by the under-privileged.

How could the largest part of profit from the Heart Shop be used? Micro-credit is what we have been aiming at. Small loans are lent to those who need them to produce or to improve the product quality. The repayments are for other producers in need. Stable lives of our producers are our target.

The Heart Shop

Description:

Name “The Heart Shop”

Vision: We create a world of love where no one is under-priviledged.

Mission statement: The establishment of “ The Heart Shop” is not only to sell handicraft products  and souvenirs made by the under-priviledged; our primary mission is to sell their efforts to be useful people and to sell the care that each person wants to give to their beloved. “To love and to be loved” is what we want to spread to each of our supplier and customer.

Values:
  1. Corpotate Social Responsibility - our focus is on the people we work with (suppliers, manufacturers, customers and the community); the only profit we strive for is the one which helps bring benefits to these people, and through which we can nurture and promulgate the concept of “ To love and to be loved”
  2. Honesty and Integrity - we are committed to performing our work with truth and transparency.
  3. Profit, but profit from work that benefits society
  4. Nurturing and promulgation of “To love and to be loved”
These values serve as guidelines for our conduct and behaviour as we work towards our vision.

Products:

The Vietnamese handicraft products are made by Vietnamese disabled people such as the dumb, the deaf, the blind, the armless, the legless, or the victims of Orange Agent, etc.

Cambodian Products are made by vulnerable women, Landmine and Polio Disabled Artisans, and young disabled Cambodians.

Laotian products are made by Laotian disabled women.

The Tibetan handicraft products are made by Tibetan refugees in India, those who have no nationality.
